We arrived at this beautiful 1830s Georgian townhouse in South London's artsy Camberwell, peered down into the kitchen through the big arched window just below street level and knew we were in for a treat.
The calm neutral tones are what make this room feel so special and different. Nestled in the basement, where it always would have been, and furnished with deVOL's Classic English cupboards, it was all just right.
It's the gentle, undramatic colours that are becoming everyone's choice these days, we're back to the good old-fashioned off-whites, clotted creams and buttery yellows. These stylish customers chose so well here, pairing a muted pale yellow with an authentic darker shade, a sort of purpley brown, to add a little depth and contrast, quite reminiscent of historic under-the-stairs kitchens.
The mix of wide board oak and honed Carrara marble for the worktops was clever with these more earthy colours. Notice the Ogee edging on the stone too, we love this, a stepped and moulded finish that is actually very traditional and adds a certain sophistication to a kitchen run. It's these extra little additions that speak volumes when incorporated thoughtfully.
For a kitchen so serene, it's big on storage, prep space and functionality. A neat L-shaped base run houses the cooker and sink, a separate tall larder for the integrated fridge and freezer and a big prep table sits in the middle. The choice to stick to just drawers, front and back, on this classic freestanding piece was so good. It's amazing in any cupboard run or standalone piece how simplicity, symmetry and uniformity make for a tasteful and understated look with a more bespoke feel.
We can't forget about the little walk-in pantry!! One closed and one skirted base cupboard, this time from deVOL's Shaker collection, topped with honed black granite and paired with tongue and groove panelling, slim shelves and painted head to toe in the prettiest baked browny red. These pantries are practicality at its best, big and small appliances hidden away but so usable, tins and jars and ingredients easy to see and retrieve. It seems these old-time rooms are becoming indispensable once again.
These customers turned to us not only for their new cupboards, but for all the beautiful (and very important) finishing touches too. Café curtain rails up at the window, a handsome Heirloom Gaselier Light over the prep table, Mini Creamware Wall Lights, Aged Brass taps, hanging rails and handles and a couple of our Creedy Stools. See, creating completely authentic interiors is actually so much easier than you think, with a little help from deVOL.
